"Banteay Samre is a large flat temple, so beautiful, and lovely temple, displaying distinctively Angkor Wat-style architecture and artistry. However, rarely of the visitor as it a bit far away from the route of the Grand Circuit, however, it will be worth of visit."
Temple Info
Banteay Samre "The Citadel of the Samre" is a temple at Siem Reap Angkor, Cambodia, located 400 meters to the east of the East Baray. The temple was built during the reign of Suryavarman II (A king who was started built the Angkor Wat) and continued by Yasovarman II in the early 12th century, it is a Hindu temple in the Angkor Wat style.
Banteay Samre is a large flat temple. The temple underwent extensive restoration by archaeologists. It was constructed around the same time as Angkor Wat.
The temple uses the same materials as the Banteay Srei temple which located on the northern side of it. It was excellently restored by Maurice Glaize from 1936 until 1944 (was a French architect and archeologist, Conservator of Angkor from 1937 to 1945).
The design of its single ogival tower is immediately recognizable as Angkor Wat style along with other temples in the region such as Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda temples.
The temple is a similarity to some monuments of Phimai temple in north-east Thailand (a temple built by Jayavarman II now in Thailand, were built mainly under the cause of the "Deveraja cult," or "the King that resembles a god." Jayavarman II was the most mentioned "Devaraja." The Devaraja cult developed the belief of worshiping Shiva and the principle that the king was an avatar of Shiva. Under this principle, Khmer rulers built temples to glorify the reign of the king along with the spread of Hinduism.)
While there are no inscriptions describing its foundation, it seems likely to have been built by a high official of the court during the reign of King Suryavarman II.
It has a single tower over the shrine and this is connected by an Antarala to a mandapa. All of this is flanked by two libraries, and two concentric gallery enclosures surround the ensemble.
Banteay Samre is approached by a 200 meters long raised causeway from the east. This suggests that the temple enclosed a reasonably sized town. An avenue of 350 meters leads from the East Baray, ending in another cruciform terrace at the west side of the temple.
The outer enclosure wall is 6 meters high and the inner enclosure has gopuras at the cardinal points.
