The temple contains elements from both Hinduism and Buddhism. There also aren’t any inscriptions to help date Preah Palilay, so the exact date is unknown. The temple perhaps built by King Jayavarman VIII or another king later.
The temple of Preah Palilay is often overlooked by many visitors, but reality, the temple quite beautiful and unique structure, the surrounding thick jungle, 7-headed nagas, and headless guards create a strange-feel and a must-see temple.
The 7-headed nagas of Preah Palilay |
The coexistence of Hindu and Buddhist elements and lacking foundation stele or inscriptions make somewhat difficult dating this temple. Generally ascribed to Jayavarman VIII reign, but it seems difficult to explain how the Buddhist imagery could have survived from the iconoclast fury of that epoch time. Maybe it was built in different periods: the sanctuary in the first half of the 12th century, while the gopura in the late 13th or early 14th century.
