South Gate of Angkor Thom (Tonle Om Gate), is one of the most interesting places for tourists.

"South Gate is one of the interesting places for tourists. All tourists are not missed to see it. They are always dropped when they gross into the Angkor Thom area and enjoy taking nice photographs".

Temple Info

The south gate of Angkor Thom is most popular with visitors, as it has been fully restored and many of the heads (mostly copies) remain in place. The gate is on the main road into Angkor Thom from Angkor Wat, and it gets very busy at peak times.

South Gate is one of the 5 gates which guard the ancient city of Angkor Thom and is the best preserved of all the gates. It was built by King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th Century, serving as 1 of the 5 holy Buddhist gateways to Angkor Thom. Some of the initial heads from the 'naga avenue' are now kept in the Angkor conservation museum.
